New York Post Online Edition: seven
OK, you guys are going to love this one. "I tell people that I think that Walter Cronkite would be a good President. Sometimes they say, "But he is not running," as though there were some law that says only people who were promoting themselves and actively seeking the office could be chosen as our President" (John Champaign). Walter Cronkite didn't expect to live this long, I guess. He's currently bemoaning his lack of presence on the news and says he was double crossed by Van Gordon Sauter, Barbara Walters, et al. He was supposed to still get to do specials, and other cool stuff like that.

I tell ya what -- back in 1986 when I was at UTSA, a character named John Champaign was running a one-man grass-roots campaign to get Walter on the presidential ticket. At the time, I contacted Cronkite's office and spoke with his secretary. (Walter was boating at the time.) She said he had no intentions of running -- grassroots or not. But Champaign just can't leave it alone -- now he wants to "draft" Walter, aparently against his will. I think Cronkite would just like to get back on the news.... :)
